  • Safe Use of Shackles

The European Type Large Bow Shackle is a versatile, commercial-grade rigging component designed for general utility, towing, and light lashing. Its oversized rounded geometry provides significant internal clearance, making it the ideal choice for connecting multiple lines or bulky fittings that would overcrowd a standard shackle.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: COMMERCIAL GRADE - NOT FOR OVERHEAD LIFTING.
These shackles are commercial pattern and are not rated for critical industrial overhead lifting. They are intended for lashing, fishing gear, and general non-safety-critical hardware applications.
📐 Oversized Bow Geometry

Features a significantly larger and rounder "bow" than standard shackles. This expanded internal area provides ample room for multiple sling legs and large hooks without overcrowding the hardware.

⚙️ Balanced "Same-Size" Design

Engineered with a pin diameter that matches the body diameter. This balanced configuration ensures reliable load distribution and consistent mechanical strength across the entire assembly.

🛡️ Weather-Resistant Finish

Protected by a bright electro-galvanized coating, providing essential corrosion resistance for marine, coastal, and outdoor industrial environments.

⚓ Versatile Utility

Widely utilized on commercial trawlers and fishing vessels, as well as for general mooring and material handling where commercial-pattern hardware is industry standard.

Q: Can I use a commercial European type shackle for critical overhead lifting? A: Generally, no. These shackles are commercial grade and often lack the 6:1 safety factor and rigorous testing required by standards like EN 13889. They are best suited for general rigging, lashing, and fishing gear where commercial-pattern hardware is locally accepted.
Q: What is the benefit of the "Large Bow" over a standard Dee shackle?A: The larger, rounded bow allows the shackle to handle multi-directional loads more safely. It also provides the necessary clearance to connect multiple sling eyes or large thimbles to a single point, which is physically impossible with the narrow throat of a Dee shackle.

Safety Guidelines

Always

  • Store and handle shackles correctly.
  • Inspect shackles before use and before placing into storage.
  • Select the correct pattern of shackle (Dee/Bow) and pin type for the application.
  • Fully tighten the pin before lifting.
  • Ensure the load acts through the centre line of the shackle.
  • Allow for the full resultant imposed load (consider angles).

Never

  • Use shackles with bent pins or deformed bodies.
  • Force, hammer, or wedge shackles into position.
  • Eccentrically load shackles (side loading).
  • Replace the pin with a standard bolt.
  • Fit pins in contact with moving parts which may unscrew them.
  • Shock load shackles.

Selection & Operation Guide

Selecting the Correct Shackle

Type: Use Anchor (Bow) shackles for multi-leg systems or where side loading may occur. Use Chain (Dee) shackles for straight-line pulls.

Pin Type:
Screw Pin: Suitable for general, non-permanent purposes.
Bolt Type (Safety Pin): Essential for long-term installations or where the pin may rotate under load.

⚠️ CAUTION: Loading on the Pin BS and ISO Standard shackles are rated for the pin to accept a central point load. Unless stated otherwise, assume the jaw must be fully filled and the load evenly distributed across the full pin width.

Using Shackles Safely

Avoid Side Loading: Position the shackle so the body takes the load along its center line. Use spacers if necessary to center the load on the pin.

Tightening: Tighten screw pins by hand, then lock with a small bar. Do not overtighten to the point of deforming the body. For bolt types, ensure the split cotter pin is fitted.

Choke Hitches: Place the pin through the eye of the sling. Never place the pin in contact with the "bight" of the choke or moving parts, as friction can unscrew the pin.

Maintenance & Storage

Storage: Store in a clean, dry place protected from corrosion. Never modify or galvanize a shackle without supplier approval.

Inspection: Check regularly for: distorted/stretched bodies, bent pins, damaged threads, nicks, gouges, or corrosion. illegible markings. If any defect is found, refer to a Competent Person.
